Umbrella
Umbrella
A broken umbrella lying center stage.
ONE stands to the side, ignoring it.
TWO enters, sees umbrella, goes straight
to it and picks it up.
ONE
Mine.
TWO
This?
ONE
Better believe it.
(TWO looks at umbrella.)
TWO
It’s broken.
ONE
So you wouldn’t want it anyhow.
TWO
Why do you?
ONE
None of your damn business.
(Pause.)
TWO
I’m taking it.
ONE
I’d like to see you try.
TWO
I’d like to see you stop me.
ONE
You would, huh.
(Pause.)
Put it back. Slowly.
TWO
But it’s broken!
ONE
I said put it back.
(TWO hesitates, then puts it down.)
That’s better.
TWO
Happy?
ONE
Oh yeah.
TWO
Good.
(TWO picks up the umbrella again.)
Mine.
ONE
Yours, huh.
TWO
Better believe it.
ONE
What if I don’t?
TWO
You want to find out?
ONE
What if I did?
(Pause.)
TWO
I thought so.
(TWO exits with the umbrella.)
ONE
You won’t get far with that.
You won’t get far.
Come back with that.
Do you hear me? I said come back.
Come back.
(Long pause.
ONE starts to weep.
LIGHTS OUT.)
