What’s On
What’s On
A MAN and a WOMAN sit gazing at an unplugged TV.
MAN
Green.
WOMAN
Gray-green.
MAN
Like the sky before a tornado.
WOMAN
Like the sea.
(Pause.)
MAN
Window’s reflected in it.
WOMAN
You can see the fire escape.
MAN
The willow.
WOMAN
The building next door.
MAN
The windows of the building next door.
WOMAN
The sun’s shining on them.
MAN
It’s beautiful.
(Pause.)
WOMAN
So quiet.
MAN
Just our voices.
WOMAN
Shh.
(Pause.)
The breeze.
MAN
Traffic. Far away. Traffic.
WOMAN
There’s a siren somewhere.
(Pause. The man points the remote.)
MAN
Let’s pretend I’m changing the channel.
WOMAN
Okay.
MAN
What do you see?
WOMAN
What do I want to see?
MAN
Yes. What do you want to see?
(Pause.)
WOMAN
You. Me. Two shapes. On a sofa. Looking straight ahead. Not at each other. It’s like they’re watching TV.
MAN
They’re watching TV.
WOMAN
And now they’re getting tired of it.
MAN
They want to look at each other.
WOMAN
So they turn it...
MAN
Off.
(MAN presses remote.
LIGHTS OUT.)
